hall-verb

HallVerb

HallVerb is an implementation of “Freeverb” (see https://ccrma.stanford.edu/~jos/pasp/Freeverb.html), a Schroeder-Moorer reverb effect. Our first implementation was called “Reverb-f” (F for Freeverb), and this is still reflected in the GUI, although we changed the effect name to “HallVerb”.

Note this is the original Freeverb algorithm, NOT “Freeverb3” as implemented in the newer Dragonfly reverbs.

Controls/parameters

HallVerb has five control knobs and one checkbox, each corresponding to an identically-named parameter available for modulation, as follows. Note all parameters are “normalized” values between 0.0 and 1.0.

  • Room Size: 0.0 (very small) to 1.0 (very large), default 0.5; essentially a Feedback amount.
  • Damping: 0.0 (no damping, very bright) to 1.0 (max damping, very dark), default 0.5. Amount of low-pass filtering in the feedback path.
  • Wet Level: mix fraction for “wet” (processed) signal at the output, 0.0 (none) to 1.0 (full), default 0.33.
  • Dry Level: mix fraction for “dry” (unprocessed) signal at the output, 0.0 (none) to 1.0 (full), default 0.4.
  • Width: apparent stereo width, 0.0 (mono) to 1.0 (spacious stereo), default 1.0.
  • Freeze: when checked, “freezes” the current wet signal, allowing it to recirculate forever, and NOT processing the input signal at all (other than passing it to the output according to Dry Level).

Tips and Tricks

  • The higher the Room Size setting, the longer the reverb tail rings out
  • Decrease Damping for a bright sound, set high for a dark sound (also tends to reduce tail length).
  • When using this or any reverb effect on an AUX layer, set Dry/Wet Mix to 100%. When using as an in-line effect on an INST layer, you would normally keep the Wet Level below 50%. Low values can be subtle but quite effective.
