PhaseMORE

PhaseMORE is a new built-in stereo phaser effect added in Unify 1.10.x, to complement the existing PhaseMod plug-in.

A phaser (aka phase shifter) is essentially a notch filter whose center frequency is modulated with an LFO. PhaseMod uses a single notch filter, and hence its effect is somewhat subtle. PhaseMORE uses a cascade of up to ten notch filters–the greater the number of filter stages activated, the more powerful the phasing effect.

User interface

The PhaseMORE GUI consists of a row of preset selection controls at the top, and a row of parameter knobs below.

Preset selection

Unify 1.10.x's content update .guru file installs 22 presets into the Presets/Plug-In Presets/PhaseMORE folder under the main Unify data folder. You can choose among these presets using the wide pop-up menu; when the plug-in is first loaded, this will say “Click to choose a preset”. You can also use the left/right arrow buttons to the left and right of the menu to advance back/forward through this list of presets.

You may also save your own new presets using the Save… button. This will open a standard file-save dialog, initially positioned to the main PhaseMORE presets folder. Give your preset a name (file name, with the extension .xml) and save it into this folder if you would like it to appear in the pop-up list.

If you wish, you may save your presets into any folder of your choice. These presets will not appear in the pop-up menu, but you may use the Load… button to locate and load them.

If you select a preset and then adjust any of the parameter knobs, the displayed preset name will update to add an asterisk (“*”) at the start, indicating that it has been changed, and you should save it if you like the sound.

Note you can overwrite any of the 22 “factory presets”, but it's probably better to save your own under new names, because there isn't a quick way to undo this. (If you still have the v1.10.x content-update .guru file, you can re-load it into Unify to restore all 22 factor presets.)

Parameters

PhaseMORE has eight parameter knobs, as follows:

  1. Stages: sets the number of cascaded notch-filter stages, range 1 to 10
  2. Freq: sets the lower limit of the center-frequency range (see Depth below)
  3. Fback: sets the percentage of filtered signal fed back into the input, range -99% to +99% (negative values cause the signal to be inverted before being fed back)
  4. Res: sets the resonance or “Q” of the filter stages, range 0.1 (wide notch) to 10.0 (very narrow)
  5. Rate: sets the LFO rate in Hz
  6. Depth: sets the upper limit of the center-frequency range
  7. Skew: adjusts how the LFO modulates the center-frequency, range 0.25 (faster motion at the bottom end of the range) through 0.5 (symmetric) to 1.25 (faster motion at the top end of the range)
  8. Mix: adjusts wet/dry mix, range 0% (fully dry) to 100% (fully wet)

Freezing the LFO

Setting Rate or Depth to 0 will “freeze” the LFO, allowing you to sweep the notch frequency manually using the Freq knob. It's usually better to zero the Rate control; quickly setting the Depth to zero may result in clicking.
